Many of you have followed our family struggle with our son Berlyn and his Autism. We have our good days and our bad days. Some days, the tantrums are out of control and he screams and scratches at his ears and face when he has a sensory over-load and lately he has started rocking again when he gets anxious. On his good days, he speaks well and asks a ton of questions. His brain is over processing. He does have absence seizures occasionally and can let us know when they are coming. He calls himself a little “AUTIST”.
He is high-functioning autistic with PDD (Pervasive Development Disorder). He is doing well in school, but 2nd grade this year has become quite a challenge. We have a friend making him a weighted snake to wear in the classroom and he does have a pair of earphones that he puts on when totally over-whelmed. I have also found directions to make a weighted blanket on Pinterest.
Our name was given to Horses with H.E.A.R.T. three years ago, a local non-profit company in Chino Valley to get some therapy for him. This is not just any therapy, this is a horse riding program for special needs. Our goal is to raise $840 to pay for Berlyn’s lessons. $840 pays for the entire years worth of lessons for him (24 group lessons at $35/each) Shelby donated 175 hours last year to horses with heart to be a side and lead walker to other kids in the program as well. This winter we hosted 2 of their horses (a mini and a pony named Buttercup and Lark) at our home where Berlyn was able to ride in the off season. Berlyn was part of the special needs drill team last year and also received 1st place for his division!
Any size donation will help get him involved in this amazing program. If you can, please donate $5 or $10. Checks can be made out to Horses with H.E.A.R.T and write Berlyn’s Riding Sessions in the memo line. (mail checks to Horses with H.E.A.R.T, PO Box 2427, Chino Valley, AZ 86323 or take them by Mazy’s in Chino Valley by March 15th). If you do mail a check, please send us an email so that we can mark you down on our list of his goal.
