Why does this happen?
As the Mentos candy sinks in the bottle, the candy causes the production of more and more carbon dioxide bubbles, and the rising bubbles react with carbon dioxide that is still dissolved in the soda to cause more carbon dioxide to be freed and create even more bubbles, resulting in the eruption.
The eruption is caused by a physical reaction, rather than any chemical reaction. The addition of the Mentos leads to the rapid nucleation of carbon dioxide gas bubbles precipitating out of solution:
CO2 (aq) -> CO2(g)
The conversion of dissolved carbon dioxide to gaseous carbon dioxide forms rapidly expanding gas bubbles in the soda, which pushes the beverage contents out of the container.
This experiment is so simple. You need a 2-liter bottle of diet coke (Regular doesn’t work the same because the corn s)syrup counters the CO2) and a sleeve of mentos candy (not the mentos gum)Thank you for visiting KrisandLarry.com - We are a homschooling, homesteading family from Arizona.
