A Brief History of Quiche
Quiche, a savory custard pie, traces its origins back to the medieval German kingdom of Lothringen, which the French later renamed Lorraine. The term "quiche" is derived from the German word "kuchen," meaning cake. Initially, quiche Lorraine was made with a simple mixture of eggs, cream, and bacon. Over time, this dish evolved, and the French culinary tradition incorporated cheese, transforming it into the rich, flavorful quiche we know today. While it began as a humble, rustic dish, quiche has become a staple in both casual and fine dining, beloved for its versatility and comforting taste.
Using Extra Eggs on the Homestead and Eating What You Grow
One of the joys of homesteading is the ability to produce and consume your own food. When your hens are laying abundantly, you might find yourself with a surplus of eggs. This is where creative, delicious recipes like quiche come in handy, allowing you to make the most of your bounty. Utilizing extra eggs not only reduces waste but also ensures you're eating fresh, wholesome food. Embracing the "eat what you grow" philosophy fosters a deeper connection to your food, enhances self-sufficiency, and promotes sustainability. By incorporating your homegrown produce into your meals, you enjoy the full flavors and nutritional benefits of fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
