Creating Old Fashioned Molasses Popcorn Balls

Embarking on a nostalgic culinary journey, I recently had the pleasure of making Old Fashioned Molasses Popcorn Balls with my mom and grandma. As we gathered in the kitchen, the air filled with the sweet aroma of molasses, anticipation, and the joy of creating a timeless treat together.

Popping corn kernels to perfection, we amassed a mountain of fluffy popcorn, a testament to the heartwarming simplicity of this family-friendly activity. In a collaborative effort, my mom shared cherished memories of making popcorn balls, a tradition passed down through generations. The kitchen became a space where stories unfolded, blending the past and present.

The molasses concoction bubbled on the stove, transforming into a rich, sugary elixir. Stirring with care, we marveled at the alchemical process that would bind our popcorn into delectable spheres of sweetness. The aroma alone evoked memories of cozy evenings spent indulging in these homemade delights.

As we shaped the warm, gooey mixture into balls, laughter echoed through the kitchen, creating a tapestry of shared moments. Grease-covered hands and sticky fingers were badges of our collaborative effort. The parchment-lined tray became a canvas for our edible masterpieces, cooling and solidifying into the epitome of Old Fashioned Molasses Popcorn Balls.

This experience was not merely a culinary endeavor; it was a celebration of family, tradition, and the simple joys found in the heart of our home—the kitchen. The resulting popcorn balls, a tangible embodiment of our shared heritage, served as a delicious testament to the power of generational connection and the magic that happens when loved ones come together in the spirit of creating something timeless.

Popcorn Balls

Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 12 cups popped popcorn (about 1/2 cup unpopped kernels)

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/3 cup molasses

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1

Pop the popcorn and set it aside in a large mixing bowl, ensuring there are no unpopped kernels.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, molasses, butter, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil.

Step 3

Continue to boil the mixture for about 4-5 minutes, or until it reaches the soft ball stage (about 235-240°F or 113-116°C).

Step 4

Remove the saucepan from heat and quickly stir in the baking soda and vanilla extract. Be careful, as the mixture will bubble up.

Step 5

Immediately pour the hot molasses mixture over the popped popcorn, stirring well to coat the popcorn evenly.

Step 6

Allow the mixture to cool slightly until it's comfortable to handle.

Step 7

Grease your hands with butter or cooking spray, and shape the coated popcorn into balls. You can make them as small or as large as you like.

Step 8

Place the popcorn balls on a parchment-lined tray to cool completely and set.

Now you have delicious Old Fashioned Molasses Popcorn Balls ready to enjoy! These make for a delightful treat, and it's a fun activity to involve your kids in the kitchen.
